Rock Pictures for Website and Print use
Finding good rocks to photograph is easier in dry climates. In areas with lots of rain you can't see the rocks for all the trees. There is an old joke that goes "Not a tree in sight to spoil the view!"
The Utah "Slick Rock" country is especially nice for photography of rocks. It is very dry so there is little vegatation. However, much of the rock is sandstone which erodes easily. Water running off the exposed rocks drips onto other soft sandstone and creates hollows that hold water. As a result there are tiny ponds, each with an established flora and fauna, in the most unlikely places.
Certain kinds of rocks are also called "Gems" In parts of New Mexico and Arizona microcrystaline quartz such as jasper is scattered all over the ground. In volcanic areas pieces of obsidian are common. In Northern Arizona petrified rock can be picked up (not in national parks though).
Our rock pictures range from semi-precious stones photographed in our studio to rock strata and weathered boulders.
This website displays only a few of our collection of rock pictures. At Walking Rain Gallery we have more, as well as many pictures of other subjects. Clicking links on this site will take you to the rock category of Walking Rain Gallery.
